About Us
“People with a disability have to have a seat at the table for everything”
We believe people with communication impairments desire a greater Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) experience. Those who have severe communication impairments, can also have significant barriers and adverse challenges to overcome in their lives. Innovative and engaging AAC technologies can play a vital role in supporting greater independence, inclusivity and confidence in their abilities.
Out company – Assistive Access PTY LTD designs and builds easy to use universal Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) applications. Our goal is to build and deliver a streamlined user experience that engages, captivates and inspires our users. We build our platforms upon the powerful capabilities of the iPad. We wanted customisable folders to offer transformational solutions through words, word strings and images – recognisable across various disabilities. And with only one touch a user can swap between these folders. To level up iVocab we also introduce Explore. It is a powerful platform, designed to include members of any care team, for facilitating and or helping users create and publish folders for sharing within the community. With Explore users can quickly get started on their iVocab journey.
iVocab have engaged students with various abilities struggling to connect with the current AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) applications. We have identified that students do however connect, both effectively and intuitively, with other applications and products. Gary, our developer, is a father of a special needs son (8 years old) who has level 3 autism along with a rare syndrome. One specific trait sees him having low muscle tone causing his speech to be adversely impacted. Gary’s son was provided (NDIS funded) with an iPad and one of the AAC applications on the suggestion of his occupational therapist. After four hours of setup time (two with the OT, and a further two at home), the application was still in need of organising. His son, 5 at the time, who was/is completely proficient within the iOS suite did not use it. He has never thought to pick it up to communicate his needs with his family. Complete fail.
Aware of the issues, shortcomings and with our combined experiences we contacted and directly sourced feedback from a number of speech pathologists. They had indicated there is a growing market and a demand for new and improved AAC applications.
Journal references (Effects_Of_AAC_Interventions, Language_Intervention_Practices, School_Based_Use_of_iPads) for problem/ solution discussions.
iVocab was designed with the lowest possible learning curve. Both carer (assistant operator) and end user were fully considered when planning the user experience. By having a familiar editing suite the carer is able to rapidly achieve the initial setup procedures – lowering costs, saving time and frustrations – that are currently known. Using unique synthetic voices, iVocab employs Googles powerful AI neural networks to deliver a high-fidelity-audio user experience.
